[[Learning Readiness]] [[The Drivers of Learning]] This ideally should happen in four stages. 1) Putting the topic in perspective 2) Understanding the idea (Comprehension) 3) Retaining what is learned 4) Integrating the knowledge ###### **1. Perspective** Here one gathers the following: - why the topic is important to me, - how it is connected to my earlier learnings, - how it is connected the larger world, to my worldview, - how it is it connected to my dreams.  Once we have this clarity, we naturally become curious and want to learn. We also know where to place the knowledge in the matrix of our world view( In other words, our brain has now created a folder where the knowledge files are going to be stored. Our heart would be filled with a desire to know more about the topic). _This stage is like we taking soup before a Dinner. It helps us in having good hunger, as they say, appetiser._  ###### **2. Comprehension** This happens in two ways mainly. Firstly, Listening. Second, Reading. 1. **Listening Skills**: Listening starts when the ears are open. Unlike our eyes or mouth, ear doesn’t have an option to physically open or close it. But that doesn’t mean ear is always open and listening. We have to actively open it. When we do it, listening begins. As our eyes can focus what they want to see, ears have the ability to tune in to what they want to hear.  2. **Reading Skills**: We have to read in a structured manner. One practical method is an approach called [[SQ3R]]. _This is the stage of eating the Dinner._ ###### **3. Mastery The Flying Hours Paradigm ##### 4.Retention** We forget almost 80 percent of what we have learned if the study involves only reading/ listening. That is, we retain only 20 percent. However, retention increases dramatically when we follow [[Retention or Memorising|a few simple protocols]]. One important aspect of Memorising is the speed with which items can be retrieved from memory. You would note that a movie song we are familiar with does not take any effort or time for retrieving it. It is as if the song resides at the tip of your tongue. One clear indication of the quality of retention is this speed with which things are retrieved. If you good at multiplication tables, the time to multiply two digits is greatly reduced and this saves precious time during examination and is surely one way of scoring more marks and get better ranks. _This is the stage when our body absorbs the digested food_ A practical technique is [[Serial Mopping]]. A practical technique is [[Serial Mopping]]. ###### **5. Integration** Marks in Examinations are a reflection of retention and reproduction whereas the performance of the student in life is a reflection of how the child has integrated what he has learned. Hence, her salary, happiness, ability to help herself her family and the society is dependent upon how well the integration process happens. Simply put, integration is the ability of the learning body to digest the food fed to the the student’s learning belly, derive carbohydrates, protein, fat and also micronutrients such as vitamins so that the student grows into a mature, strong and healthy person. _This is the stage of and using the food absorbed for our growth and maintenance of our body_. --- We can call the process described above as the [[P-CoRe-In Model of Learning]] Studying these days has become gulping down too much carbohydrates and junk foods where the child often grows in size suddenly but eventually trigger obesity, stress and diseases. We must note that Imparted knowledge is only one way of learning. Observational Study, Research, Experiential Learning, Realisations, Epiphanies are all important other ways of learning. To conclude, we can define study **_as a process of satiating curiosity awoken towards worthy objects by understanding them, and then consolidating that understanding through retention in brain including by the use of discipline/will and integrating that well digested understanding to the larger framework the student’s heart is oriented to._** We found [the website of the Learning Strategies Centre of Cornell University](https://lsc.cornell.edu) quite resourceful.
