This was one of the most classified fighter jets. It was among the fastest and highest flying fighter jets too. The plane was hijacked by its own pilot, Lt. Viktor Belenko of the SADF on 6th of September, 1976, and landed it in the Hakodate Airport in Japan. The United States and Japan disassembled the jet, causing high tensions between the Soviet Union and Japan. The jet was later sent back in crates, with a bill of USD 40,000 for packing and for the damage of airfield at Hakodate. India also had these, in secrecy. It was announced that India had it only once it was about to retire.
