The HAL Tejas also known as Tejas Light Combat Aircraft, is a multirole fighter- interceptor. It was developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, in India.
‘Tejas’ means ‘brilliance’ in Sanskrit.
It is said to be one of the stealthiest fighters of its generation. This is because of its radar adsorbent paint and components. It is also very small compared to other aircrafts such as the Sukhoi Su-30 MKI, Rafale, F-22 Raptor, Sukhoi Su-57 Felon and Gripen Jas.
Talking about design, it has a delta wing design and has no ailerons. It is a single-engine aircraft.
It uses the American F404 turbofan engine made by the General Electric.
It also has an advanced cockpit design and control systems.
Since it is a highly manoeuvrable jet, it also needs to be stable. That is why HAL developed an indigenous fly by wire system. This can be noticed in the video of the Tejas crashing due to engine failure, in which the plane was gliding down stably after the pilot ejected.
Many countries have shown interest in the plane due to these reasons. There are also some cons. HAL was only able to make 38 jets after its introduction to the Indian Airforce in 2015. This is excluding 17 prototypes. It also has a lesser range and has issues with maintenance, radar systems and engines. This may be the reason why no country has signed a deal on this jet till today.
Tejas is also going to be developed to Tejas Mk2, which is in the prototype development phase. It is said to be solving all the issues, use the GE F414 engine and be much more stealthier and advanced in many other fields.
